Conductivity is one of the more commonly used and important water quality monitoring parameters. The conductivity of water refers to the degree to which the water in a target body of water can conduct electricity. The conductivity of water is measured by the degree of penetration of electricity into the water. In addition to being the basis for salinity and total dissolved solids calculations in most water bodies, conductivity values can also represent an early indicator of changes in water quality. Most bodies of water maintain a fairly constant conductivity that can be used as a baseline for comparison with future measurements. Significant changes, whether due to natural flooding, evaporation or man-made pollution, can cause great harm to water quality. In order to prevent water quality problems, we need to frequently monitor the conductivity value of the water body, which can be measured using a water conductivity analyzer. So which industries and applications need to monitor conductivity values?
Environmental measurement
When water becomes contaminated, its conductivity increases. Therefore, electrical conductivity is widely used as an indicator of pollution in rainwater, river water, and lake water. We also regularly use conductivity electrodes to measure in real time the conductivity of the tap and drinking water we actually consume, as well as the conductivity of water in swimming pools that come into direct contact with the human body.
Rainwater
From an environmental protection perspective, monitoring stormwater pollution levels is very important. Just as pH is important in monitoring storm water pollution, conductivity is also a very important factor and is monitored along with pH. In fact, certain types of contamination can cause high conductivity without greatly affecting pH.
Control drainage
Wastewater must be treated to reduce its level of contamination before being discharged into the environment. During the discharge phase of factories and sewage treatment plants, conductivity is monitored 24 hours a day using conductivity controllers.
Salinity measurement
Salt in food is in the form of dissolved sodium chloride. The more sodium chloride dissolves, the higher the salinity. Salinity is roughly proportional to conductivity. This principle is used in food salinity measurement, where conductivity to salt concentration conversion is a widely used method. Limiting salt intake to moderate levels is important to maintain good health, as is a salinity analyzer used to ensure that the salt's conductivity is converted into salt concentration.
Semiconductor cleaning water and medical water
Clean water is used to clean electronic components in semiconductor production lines and glass plates in LCD panel production lines. Even minute amounts of impurities remaining in such water can seriously affect product quality. Ultrapure water, which is higher in purity than purified water, is used to clean these products. Additionally, conductivity is used as an indicator of purity and is continuously monitored to keep it below specified levels. In addition, purified water with low impurity content is used in the production of food, beverages and pharmaceuticals, where conductivity is also used to control its purity. In this case, it is necessary to measure the conductivity of ultrapure water. It is recommended to use a conductivity electrode with a K constant of 0.01.
Pure water
Tap water and river water have various substances dissolved in them, so it is not actually chemically pure water. While this does not present a problem when used in our daily lives, higher purity water is required in scientific research, various industrial applications such as manufacturing and medical uses. When we take the tap or river water around us and improve the purity of the water by removing the substances dissolved in it (i.e. electrolytes), the conductivity of the water gradually decreases. If all electrolytes were removed, would the conductivity reach zero? This is because a very small number of water molecules (about 500 million) are ionized to produce hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions, making the theoretical conductivity of water at 25°C below 0.0548 μS/cm.

The above is an introduction to the application scenarios of conductivity measurement. Regarding the measurement of conductivity, daruifuno brand AEC series conductivity controllers and ASCK series conductivity probes are very suitable for conductivity measurement of various types of water quality.
